Accreditation 360 and Behavioral Health: What Changes in 2026, and What Doesn’t

The Joint Commission’s new accreditation model is live for hospitals in 2026. For behavioral health organizations, implementation dates are still to be determined. Here is what Accreditation 360 includes and how to prepare in the meantime.

What Accreditation 360 is

Accreditation 360 is The Joint Commission’s overhaul of how it accredits and certifies organizations. Its main components:1

  • An updated accreditation manual
  • A Survey Process Guide that replaces the Survey Activity Guide and is the same guide surveyors use
  • National Performance Goals that replace the former National Patient Safety Goals and absorb their content
  • The SAFEST program, which recognizes strengths observed on survey alongside the SAFER Matrix
  • An optional Continuous Engagement Model

Who it applies to first

The Joint Commission says Accreditation 360 is being rolled out first to its hospital and critical access hospital programs in 2026. Work has started on its remaining accreditation programs, with implementation dates still to be determined. Apart from the updated manual and survey process guide, Accreditation 360 practices and processes are voluntary.1

Bottom line for behavioral health

Nothing in Accreditation 360 has a behavioral health effective date yet. Keep preparing against your current behavioral health manual, and watch for The Joint Commission’s announcement.

What behavioral health providers should do now

  • Stay survey-ready. After your first survey, later Joint Commission behavioral health surveys come with seven days’ notice, so readiness has to be continuous.2
  • Strengthen the fundamentals. Current policies, clean records and staff who can explain their practice will matter under any version of the standards.
  • Rehearse. A mock survey is the fastest way to see where you stand.
  • Watch for the announcement. When The Joint Commission sets behavioral health dates, expect an updated manual and survey process guide to arrive with them.
