Joint Commission accreditation consulting

Joint Commission accreditation for behavioral health programs.

We prepare addiction treatment, mental health and opioid treatment programs for The Joint Commission’s Behavioral Health Care and Human Services survey: eligibility, standards, documents, staff and environment, with support through survey day and the follow-up.

What you get

Survey-ready, every day.

Joint Commission surveyors measure your compliance with its standards and with relevant CMS and OSHA requirements. They follow the care you deliver through records, interviews and observation, so readiness has to live in daily practice, not a binder.

Accreditation 360, The Joint Commission’s 2026 overhaul, reaches hospitals first; dates for behavioral health are still to be determined. We track it and adjust your preparation when they are announced.

How we work

Ready for the survey, and the one after it.

The Joint Commission accredits more than 4,300 behavioral health care and human services organizations. Its first survey is announced; later behavioral health surveys come with only seven days’ notice. We prepare you for both.

  1. Qualify

Confirm eligibility: the licenses your services require and the minimum volume of individuals served before you apply.

  2. Assess

A gap analysis against the behavioral health standards that apply to your settings and populations.

  3. Build

Policies, plans, personnel files and clinical records brought up to the standards, with your team.

  4. Rehearse

Mock tracers, leadership interviews and an environment-of-care walk-through, modeled on the real survey.

  5. Follow through

Survey support, then Evidence of Standards Compliance within the 60-day window if findings come up.

Before you apply: the application is valid for one year from the date you request it and the deposit is non-refundable, so we line up readiness before you start the clock.

Who is eligible for Joint Commission behavioral health accreditation?

U.S. organizations that hold any license or registration the law requires for their services, offer programs that can be evaluated against Joint Commission standards, and meet the minimum volume: at least three individuals served, with at least two active at the time of survey. Opioid treatment programs and foster care have their own volume rules.

How much does Joint Commission accreditation cost?

Fees depend on the services you provide and your average daily census. They come as annual fees, invoiced each year of the three-year cycle, plus on-site fees in the year of your survey. Ask The Joint Commission for a quote based on your actual services. We quote our own support after a free consultation.

Is the first survey announced?

Yes. The first survey The Joint Commission conducts for an organization is announced. Later behavioral health surveys come with seven days’ notice, except for hospital-based opioid treatment programs, which is why we build readiness into daily routines.

Do we need a state license first?

If the law requires a license or registration for your services, you must hold it to be eligible, and lacking one at survey is a ground for Preliminary Denial of Accreditation. We handle state licensing too, and plan both tracks together.

What if the survey finds problems?

Most organizations receive some Requirements for Improvement. You resolve them through Evidence of Standards Compliance within 60 days of the findings report being posted. We help you write and evidence each correction.

Should we choose The Joint Commission or CARF?

It depends on what your state and payers recognize, your program mix and the survey style that suits your team. Read our CARF vs. Joint Commission comparison, or ask us. We support both, including CARF accreditation.
